Mission
SERVING OTHERS
First Presbyterian Church is very outreach oriented, supporting mission locally, nationally and internationally. When Second Pres of Rahway joined forces with First Pres, the newly merged church increased its ability to reach out to others. With the proceeds from the sale of Second Presbyterian Church, a mission fund was formed to support mission projects within our community. The Second Presbyterian Mission Fund accepts applications for funding twice a year with deadlines of 3/15 and 9/15. Additional information about the deadline extension, and the application, is here.
Here is a sampling of outreach projects supported by First Pres, past and present:
Community Mission:
- CERT (Church Emergency Response Team)
Immediately following Superstorm Sandy, the church developed CERT and hired a coordinator to reach out to our neighbors in need affected by the storm. The team helped 75 families in Rahway with food, clothing, furniture, FEMA and SBA assistance, mold education and appliance replacement.
- Bi-annual flea markets
Held in April and September, the church prepares year round to present affordable merchandise to the community. The proceeds from these flea markets are tithed to a fund to be used for outreach projects.
- The Giving Tree
First Pres. collects funds to aid families struggling at Christmas time to be able to provide gifts for their families.
- Annual Coat Drive
Coats, blankets, and outerwear accessories are collected to be distributed to the guests at the Food for Friends soup kitchen.
National Mission:
- Presbyterian special offerings
Peacemaking Offering and One Great Hour of Sharing.
- CROP Walk
This walk for hunger is organized locally and supported by First Pres.
- Recognition of World AIDS Day
A memorial service dedicated to those affected by HIV/AIDS with a display of the AIDS memorial quilt from The Names Project.
